Cultivating a community of Female Muslim Creatives
Role: Artist, Team Lead (Melbourne)
Organisation: An.Other Collective
Year: 2022 - ongoing
An.Other Collective is a community of Muslim female makers, artists, and designers spanning Sydney and Melbourne.
Founded in 2022,
An.Other Collective has now grown to 35 members across diverse creative disciplines such as visual art, design, architecture, illustration, filmmaking, photography, creative writing, and more.
The term ‘An Other’ comes from the shared feeling of ‘otherness’ felt by members of the collective as they navigate what it means to be Muslim Women working in the arts in Australia.
The collective is a platform that gathers and weaves
The diverse perspectives of individuals and communities to dissolve colonial barriers and reductive misconceptions on matters associated with faith, politics, identity, art and culture.
This is achieved through the collective’s interdisciplinary blend of curatorial strategies and artistic expressions where the instrumental role of domesticity in public life acts as a center stage for new forms of spiritual preservation, collective thought and transcultural coexistence.
